Should Artificial Intelligence Provide Input in End-of-Life Decision-Making?—Reply

In Reply We thank Gross and Pratt et al for their Letters responding to our Viewpoint and welcome the opportunity to engage in these rich discussions on how best to develop and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) in the service of incapacitated patients. When we initially set out to write our article, we were deeply skeptical of using AI in such a manner. In fact, a 2019 version (coauthored by B.B. but never published) argued against using AI in preference-sensitive situations because computers are not moral agents. We thus agree with Pratt et al that the use of AI in health care is less a question of feasibility (ie, could) than of ethics (ie, should).
